For customers, bio-attributed products can be an attractive drop-in solution. They provide the same performance, quality, and formulation behavior as their conventional counterparts, while supporting the replacement of fossil resources with renewable alternatives based on a mass balance approach. As a result, customers can support the transition from fossil to renewable feedstocks without the need for reformulation, requalification, or changes to existing manufacturing processes.
Bio-attributed products therefore represent an important pathway to accelerate the transition towards renewable carbon. They enable customers to combine high product performance with a reduced reliance on fossil resources and can support broader sustainability and climate targets without compromising product quality or operational efficiency.

How it works in detail
Biomass Balance Approach (BMB): Biomass Balance is a mass balance approach that replaces fossil feedstocks with renewable feedstocks in the BASF production system and attributes them to specific sales products. For every ton of BMB product purchased, we replace the required amount of fossil feedstock with renewable feedstock (e.g. biomethane, bio-naphtha) at the beginning of our value chain. Our biomass balanced products are certified according to the independent certification scheme REDcert2 and audited by TÜV Nord.
Beyond increasing the share of renewable feedstocks, bio-attributed products can contribute to a reduced product carbon footprint (PCF) taking biogenic carbon into account, supporting customers on their journey towards lower-carbon formulations.
