Biorefinery
Unlocking the Future

Imagine a world where we can transform everyday waste into valuable products, reducing our reliance on fossil fuels and minimizing environmental impact. This is the promise of biorefining. At its core, biorefining is the process of converting biomass – such as agricultural residues, forestry by-products, and even algae – into a spectrum of marketable products and energy.

At BASF, we offer an array of products – catalysts, chelating agents, defoamers, and more - that pave the way towards a waste-free world.

Product Application
Pulp & Paper
Pulping is the transformative journey from wood to cellulose, the essential raw material for crafting paper and synthetic fibers like viscose and rayon. Our expertise and technology seamlessly integrate with pulp production, ensuring exceptional results. From digesting aids and pitch control aids to chelating agents, de-inking aids, dispersants, and defoamers, our comprehensive portfolio offers the perfect solution for your specific needs. We are dedicated to helping you find the ideal answer for your application.

Product Application
Biodiesel
Biodiesel can be crafted from waste oils or fats, such as used cooking oils (UCO) or tallow. These waste oils often contain higher levels of free fatty acids, which must be removed as they interfere with the biodiesel production process. This removal is typically achieved through a (pre-) esterification step using an acid catalyst. Our methanesulfonic acid - Lutropur MSA - as a catalyst, offers significant advantages over alternatives like sulfuric acid, as it generates fewer byproducts and less coking, resulting in a less colored product and higher yields.

Product Application
Bioethanol
Harnessing the power of non-food biomass, 2nd generation bioethanol production transforms agricultural residues and waste into sustainable fuel. This innovative process not only reduces greenhouse gas emissions but also promotes a circular economy, turning waste into a valuable resource for a greener future.

Some of our Biorefinery Product Highlights

Functionalities in Biorefinery

Functionalities
Dispersing
Solid particles dispersed in water tend to re-agglomerate if particle-particle repulsion is insufficient. This spontaneous process, known as flocculation, leads to instability in dispersions.
Dispersing agents prevent flocculation by stabilizing solid-liquid systems.

Our products enable high-concentration dispersions, extended stability, and compatibility with diverse chemical additives across industries.

Functionalities
Foam Control
Foam can be either beneficial or disruptive, depending on the application. In some processes, stable foam is required; in others, it impairs efficiency and product quality. Drawing on extensive experience, we offer solutions that ensure optimal foam control tailored to your process needs.

Functionalities
Control of Metal Ions
Our products regulate the behavior of metal ions through targeted interactions. Chelating agents, water-soluble polymers, and silicates bind unwanted ions to prevent scale formation.

For controlled metal deposition and the creation of glossy, well-adhering surfaces, electroplating additives and methanesulfonic acid (MSA) are essential.

Functionalities
Acid Catalysts
Our products function as acid catalysts in a variety of chemical reactions, in particular for the production of plasticizers, acrylates, and biodiesel, where catalytic efficiency and process reliability are essential.

An acid catalyst facilitates and accelerates chemical transformations without being consumed in the reaction itself—enabling optimized throughput and consistent product quality
