Chemical Processing
Our solutions. Driving your success.

Our broad portfolio enable us to address major needs in chemical processing. We offer reactants (monomers, chelates, PAGs), processing aids (surfactants, solvents, and catalysts), additives used in product separation and purification, as well es additives for reactor cleaning and descaling.

With our know-how over different product functionalities, we support customers in product selection suited to run a more efficient and sustainable chemical production.

Functionalities in Chemical processing

Functionalities
Acid Catalysts
Our products function as acid catalysts in a variety of chemical reactions, in particular for the production of plasticizers, acrylates, and biodiesel, where catalytic efficiency and process reliability are essential.

An acid catalyst facilitates and accelerates chemical transformations without being consumed in the reaction itself—enabling optimized throughput and consistent product quality

Functionalities
Control of Metal Ions
Our products regulate the behavior of metal ions through targeted interactions. Chelating agents, water-soluble polymers, and silicates bind unwanted ions to prevent scale formation.

For controlled metal deposition and the creation of glossy, well-adhering surfaces, electroplating additives and methanesulfonic acid (MSA) are essential.

Functionalities
Emulsifying
Emulsifiers are used to create and stabilize mixtures of two or more immiscible liquids. They are surface-active substances composed of hydrophilic and lipophilic segments, reducing coalescence and stabilizing droplet formation.

The choice of emulsifier depends on the emulsion type and desired performance characteristics.

Functionalities
Surface Modification
Our products modify surface characteristics to enhance performance in downstream applications. They improve coating adhesion, increase hydrophobicity for easier rinsing, adjust surface friction, and reduce corrosion.

Functionalities
Adjuvancy
Adjuvants are key components to enhance the efficacy of active ingredients. They improve retention, wetting, spreading, and uptake—ensuring efficient and consistent delivery. Used in both in-can and tank-mix systems, they are essential for maximizing the performance of synthetic and biological actives. Selection from our broad portfolio is guided by application-specific requirements and expert support.

Functionalities
Dispersing
Solid particles dispersed in water tend to re-agglomerate if particle-particle repulsion is insufficient. This spontaneous process, known as flocculation, leads to instability in dispersions.
Dispersing agents prevent flocculation by stabilizing solid-liquid systems.

Our products enable high-concentration dispersions, extended stability, and compatibility with diverse chemical additives across industries.

Functionalities
Foam Control
Foam can be either beneficial or disruptive, depending on the application. In some processes, stable foam is required; in others, it impairs efficiency and product quality. Drawing on extensive experience, we offer solutions that ensure optimal foam control tailored to your process needs.

Functionalities
Solvency
Solvents must meet increasingly stringent environmental, health, and safety standards while maintaining high performance, quality, and workability. Through advanced technological expertise and ongoing research, BASF develops solutions that adapt to evolving customer requirements.

Our solvent portfolio covers a broad range of chemical classes, including fatty alcohols, dimethylamides, methyl esters, and alkyl esters. Structural variations—such as saturated vs. unsaturated and linear vs. branched carbon chains—enable tailored solvency options for diverse applications.
