BASF researchers to share innovation in sustainable extraction and skin regeneration at IFSCC Congress 2026

  • One podium presentation and two poster sessions highlight BASF’s latest advancements in cosmetic science

  • Research focuses on natural extraction technologies, collagen repair, and sustainable solutions for moisturizing skin care formulations

  • 36th edition of the IFSCC Congress hosted under the theme “Solving the Sustainable Beauty Equation”

Perth, Australia – September 28, 2026 – BASF scientists will present their latest research findings at the 36th International Federation of Societies of Cosmetic Chemists (IFSCC) Congress, taking place from September 28 to October 1 in Perth, Australia. In one podium presentation and two poster sessions, BASF experts and research partners will share advances in sustainable extraction technologies, collagen science and high-performance biopolymer systems for modern skin care. The congress theme, “Solving the Sustainable Beauty Equation”, highlights the industry’s challenge to balance environmental responsibility, consumer demand and product innovation.

Advancing natural extraction with plant-derived solvents
In a podium presentation, Nicole Lv (Technical Key Account Manager at BASF Beauty Care Solutions, APAC) will introduce a novel approach to extracting valuable plant compounds using naturally derived solvents. The research demonstrates how plant waters, particularly coconut water, can serve as effective and sustainable alternatives to conventional extraction solvents while delivering enhanced extraction  efficacy. The study showed that coconut water significantly increased the polyphenol content from various botanical sources and enriched rose and citrus extracts in valuable compound classes such as flavonol glycosides and flavanone glycosides respectively. Moreover, extracts obtained through coconut water extraction demonstrated benefits related to epidermal cohesion and barrier resilience. The findings open new opportunities to unlock more potent cosmetic ingredients through bio-inspired extraction technologies.

Targeting damaged collagen to support skin regeneration
A second BASF research project explores the emerging field of collagen hybridizing peptides (CHPs), a new class of bioactive peptides inspired by biomedical research. These peptides recognize and bind to damaged collagen structures while enhancing fibroblast-matrix interactions that are critical for skin regeneration. The research team demonstrated in a clinical study that the lead CHP candidate selectively targets altered collagen, stimulates procollagen I production, supports tissue repair processes, and significantly reduces the presence of damaged collagen. Supported by advanced AI-driven molecular modeling, the work highlights the potential of intelligent peptide technologies to address visible signs of skin aging through targeted collagen repair and improved cellular communication.

Unlocking the potential of biopolymers for skin health
A joint research project between scientists from Stanford University and BASF reveals how bio-based polysaccharides form functional films on the skin and influence hydration, barrier properties and formulation performance. The researchers investigated how molecular entanglement and crystallization of biopolymers contribute to film formation and the regulation of water transport within the stratum corneum. Results showed that these bio-based additives can improve hydration retention, facilitate emollient penetration and reduce drying-induced stress while maintaining optimal skin barrier function. The findings provide new insights into the development of sustainable, high-performance moisturizing formulations that support long-term skin health.
