Deliver more with Glucopon® alkyl polyglucosides

Published: October, 2025

Consumers are seeking cleaning formulations that deliver performance and are safe for their families and the environment. According to a 2024 BASF Laundry survey of 786 U.S. consumers, 79% stated that performance is the most important feature when buying a laundry detergent. Similarly, 52% of them also stated that sustainability was also a very important purchasing criterion.

Traditionally, providing cleaning performance while meeting desired sustainable characteristics has been difficult for formulators. But what if formulators could deliver more?

With BASF’s Glucopon® range of alkyl polyglucosides (APGs), formulators can build cleaning formulations that meet the needs of the consumers and deliver more on soil removal, foaming, compaction and skin-friendliness while being derived from biobased origins. Since Glucopon APGs are not made from ethylene oxide building blocks, they are also free of 1,4 dioxane.

In terms of cleaning efficacy, APGs are well suited to deliver better outcomes compared to traditional surfactants. For example, Glucopon 480 offers a functional replacement for standard alcohol ethoxylates, delivering performance parity detergency performance under both warm- and cold-water washes.

Formulators can also use Glucopon 600 UP to enhance the detergency of LAS-based laundry detergent systems. By substituting a portion of LAS in formulation with Glucopon 600 UP, formulators can see a 10%+ improvement on removal of dust and sebum stains from fabrics.

Additionally, foaming benefits from APGs can enhance the performance and consumer perception of hard surface cleaners and manual dish wash formulations. Glucopon 215 UP can significantly enhance the foam profile of commonly used C10 Guerbet alcohol ethoxylates. These foaming benefits improve consumer perception of cleaning formulations, even in the low % actives range.

APGs are also known for their skin-friendliness, compared to traditional petro-based surfactants, like sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS). SLS can often be harsh and irritating to skin, making them undesirable for individuals with sensitive skin. The mild nature of APGs, like Glucopon 600 UP ensures that they clean effectively without compromising skin health. This makes APGs ideal for brands that are looking to build gentle yet powerful formulations
