US consumers are redefining value in laundry

COVID-19 and inflation have reshaped consumer behaviors radically as they oscillated between desiring the best cleaning performance without price considerations to allocating their spend on the best value for money options.

As inflation normalizes in the US, it becomes critical to understand how consumers will adapt their purchasing decisions in the grocery aisles. Therefore, we at BASF, surveyed 700+ US consumers to identify how stain removal performance, pricing or sustainability features drove purchasing decisions in the laundry detergent category. 

Consumers value stain-fighting performance as the most critical purchasing factor in laundry detergent 

79% of surveyed participants communicated that they made purchasing decisions on the stain removal benefits that they desired from their brands. The importance on stain-fighting performance was seen across various household incomes while other factors, e.g. sustainability and price, saw a divergence based on household earnings.

Despite the value that US consumers put on stain-fighting performance when buying laundry detergents, they are not fully satisfied with the cleaning outcomes as 49% of the surveyed participants communicated that they desire enhanced performance from their most often used brand.  

Furthermore, with the increasing prevalence of washing clothes in cold water conditions to save on energy costs, 34% of participants desired their preferred laundry brands to deliver a powerful cleaning at lower temperatures.
